First Welcome - Hych'ka

FIRST WELCOME – HYCH’KA

North Vancouver’s Presentation House Theatre and Mortal Coil Performance Society are partnering to create FIRST WELCOME – HYCH’KA – in July, August and September, 2017 in North Vancouver, Vancouver and Richmond BC. Part of Canada’s 150+ Celebrations, FIRST WELCOME –HYCH’KA explores and celebrates first contacts and welcome between people, cultures, and species.

We actively acknowledge that this art and our work takes place on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish peoples, including the territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), Stó:lō and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.

Featuring a spectacular giant Coast Salish Puppet, the Musqueam First Nation’s Tsatsu Stalqayu (or Coastal Wolf Pack), Uzume Taiko neighbourhood children, community choirs, parades with family and friends, creative workshops and much more.

These free impromptu performance experiences weave together live music, singing, puppetry and parades that engage all present, celebrating a nation founded on the experiences of immigration and first contact.

Come. Experience the excitement, curiosity and wonder of meeting someone or something new for the first time.
